Since August, I have had the pleasure of joining Liveable’s team as the inaugural Community Engagement and Partnerships Coordinator. This role has provided me the opportunity to meet people at community festivals, college fairs, and cafes; to share information about fracking and environmental justice at club meetings; to connect with other environmental advocates across North Texas; and to participate in events that foster fellowship while beautifying our environment.
Considering that I have spent most of my life as a student before now, this role has illuminated the behind-the-scenes work of organizing– the gratifying, the unglamorous, the tedious and everything in between. I better understand how media coverage can often sway politicians to consider community health protections more strongly than the personal testimonies of their constituents. I see how one-on-one conversations, rather than social media posts or news articles, can truly make a difference in helping someone understand their stake in environmental issues, such as fracking. These efforts require dedication out of love for our neighbors and greater ecosystems. Sometimes, what we do does not lead to the outcome we imagined, but everything builds towards our goal of promoting a more liveable Arlington.
Warmly,
Chioma Ugwonali
